Commuter Challenge Kick-off
Better Environmentally Sound Transportation, British Columbia
http://www.best.bc.ca/
The GVRD Commuter Challenge encompasses a number of events that are targeted to the Vancouver business community. Although only the Commuter Challenge event takes place on clean air day, the other events are designed to support and promote the overall success and impact of the Challenge.
The first event is the Kick-off to the Commuter Challenge campaign. This projected media event involves our Vancouver Mayor, Larry Campbell, challenging the Mayor of Seattle to take on the Challenge. The goal of the kick-off is to generate interest and excitement for the Commuter Challenge through media exposure. This will be held in mid-April.
The second event is a planning seminar, geared towards representatives from participating businesses/organisations. It is an afternoon event, with a projected attendance of 30-40 representatives from businesses throughout the GVRD. At the end of this planning seminar we distribute "how to guides" to all participating businesses. The guides serve as a resource for all of the individuals promoting the challenge at their workplace and cover topics like; how to register on- line, suggested time line of events, suggested promotion events, and other avenues of resources and support. This planning seminar will be held on May 3.
The third event in the series is a multi-model relay race. It is a small event that is geared towards a small number of participating organisations from the Commuter Challenge. This event is designed to demonstrate all of the ways that people can commute. The race consists of 5 legs. It begins at Burnaby Lake with kayaking, followed by mountain biking, In-line skating, taking the Skytrain and then wraps up with a running leg in downtown Vancouver. The multi-model relay race is tentatively scheduled for June 6.
The fourth and final event is the Commuter Challenge itself, to be held on June 8, 2005. We have an anticipated participation rate of 100 businesses with over 15000 employees taking part. We are planning on increasing our participation this year through the creation of professional promotional materials and through a revised, focused recruitment campaign.

It is part of Canadian Environment Week (June 4th – 10th), which was created to promote and to celebrate activities that care and nurture our environment.
Clean Air Day started some years ago in several Canadian municipalities as a day of initiatives to support Clean Air. The day has blossomed into a national campaign embracing both national and local events that celebrate clean air and climate change issues. The Government of Canada proclaimed Clean Air Day to increase public awareness about air quality and climate change. Activities encourage communities, the public, and commuters to take action on environmental, health and transportation issues; walk, bike or take public transit as your “step” towards helping to support Clean Air.
